A suitable probability distribution for the prediction of rainfall in northern regions of Kashmir Himalaya

Author(s): TA Raja and Immad A Shah

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the suitable-fit probability distribution for monthly total rainfall in the Kashmir regions of Srinagar, Qazigund, Kupwara, Pahalgam, Kukernag, and Gulmarg from 2010 to 2023. Five probability distributions were fitted: normal, log-normal, Weibull, gamma, and exponential. The goodness-of-fit statistics, such as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Cramer-von Mises, and Anderson-Darling tests, along with the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), were used to evaluate and compare the fits of these distributions. The Weibull distribution was identified as the suitable fit across these regions according to the goodness of fit criteria. The total expected monthly rainfall values calculated using the Weibull distribution can serve as a reference for design engineers in future research.
