Abstract: Unequivocally, groundnut is the king of oilseed crops, and western India is the traditional hub of it. Accordingly, with the state-wise export data available from 2007-08 onwards, the present study analyses the performance of groundnut exports using the state-level trade data of the major western Indian states of Gujarat and Maharashtra till 2023-24. The findings show that, on average, groundnut exports from Gujarat and Maharashtra reported 3.26 lakh tonnes and 0.29 lakh tonnes in volume and Rs. 2335 crores and Rs. 291 crores in nominal value, respectively. In terms of growth rate, Gujarat reported the highest growth rates for both export volume (7.55% per annum) and export value (13.41% per annum), while the negative growth rate for Maharashtra exports was higher in terms of volume (-7.57% per annum) than volume (-1.92% per annum), indicating that the growth trend of export price was much the same for both states. Further, the Markov chain analysis revealed several interesting patterns, showing that in the first period of export data (2007-2013), the retention of past export volume for Gujarat was 33.91 percent and nil for Maharashtra, but, in terms of retention of past export value, Maharashtra performed better (16.31%) than Gujarat (11.81%). In the second period (2014-2023), Gujarat surged ahead in stabilizing its exports by retaining 61.69 percent and 70.15 percent of its past export volume and value, while Maharashtra retained only 30.37 percent and 4.65 percent of its previous exports in terms of volume and value, respectively. The results of decomposition analysis are also hugely engaging to the extent that while the export value growth of exports from Gujarat is mostly driven by volume effect (92.45%) than price effect (2.07%), the groundnut export value growth of Maharashtra is equally led by volume effect (55.53%) and price effect (55.35%) but deterred by their interaction (-10.88%). It is suggested that Maharashtra, instead of promoting volume-led export growth, focus should be on high-end markets to improve its contribution to the country’s overall export value trade.
