Geometric morphometric insights into population variation in Indian stingless bees of the genus Tetragonula Moure, 1961 (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini)

Abstract: Stingless bees are eusocial insects that live together in a colony and widely known in the Indian subcontinent as ‘dammer bees’ or ‘dammar bees’ (Dammar is the resin from dipterocarp trees). The current research was conducted to analyze morphometry to know the diversity of Indian stingless bees. Morphometry of 190 stingless bees of the genus Tetragonula Moure, 1961 collected from 37 places in 19 states of India by using 36 morphological parameters was studied. Female bees from Tamil Nadu were the biggest measuring 4.82 mm in length, while female bees from Madhya Pradesh were the smallest with body length of 3.21 mm. Female bees from Manipur had the widest head measuring 1.83 mm while narrow head (1.44 mm) was observed in the female bees from Andhra Pradesh. The longest forewings (4.32 mm) and hind basitarsus (0.57 mm) was recorded in the bees from Manipur and Tamil Nadu, respectively. Longest hind tibia was recorded from Nagaland (1.63 mm) while shortest hind tibia was observed in Andhra Pradesh (1.43 mm). Results of Principal Component analysis resulted in 5 clusters, while 9 clusters were formed in Canonical Discriminant analysis of female bees. Our findings indicate that the stingless bees belonging to the genus Tetragonula in India likely comprise several undescribed species.
