Performance of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana in Akola District

Abstract: The study was conducted in Akola district of Maharashtra state with the objective to assess the performance of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. The secondary data pertains for 5 years from 2019-20 to 2023-24 was analyzed. Overall, the performance of PMFBY in Akola district during the kharif season 2023 revealed that there was an increase of 64.06 per cent in number of farmers insured and an increase in area insured by around 69.00 per cent from kharif season 2019 to
kharif season 2023. Akola tahsil consistently had higher coverage in terms of farmers, total area, beneficiaries, claim amounts, farmers’ premium and gross premiums. Notably Balapur tahsile showed highest relative increase for the same. Patur tahsil had lowest figures overall. Average area insured per farmers was 0.78 ha in Akola district during kharif 2023. The overall claim to premium ratio was less than unity 0.37 during
kharif 2023, implying PMFBY was financially viable.
