Changes in cropping pattern in Jalna district of Maharashtra

Abstract:
This study employs Markov chain analysis to investigate shifts in cropping patterns within Jalna district, Maharashtra, focusing on the area dedicated to various crops from 2013-14 to 2022-23. The findings are encapsulated in a transitional probability matrix that elucidates the stability and direction of change in crop acreage over time. Diagonal elements of the matrix reflect the stability of each crop's area, with values approaching zero indicating instability and values approaching one denoting stability.
The analysis reveals that cotton has the highest retention probability at 72%, while jowar, wheat, sugarcane, fruits, and vegetables exhibit a complete loss of their previous acreage. Notably, wheat was entirely replaced by cotton, and sugarcane lost significant area to jowar, oilseeds, and vegetables. Bajra retained 60% of its area but primarily ceded space to jowar. Maize displayed a retention probability of 31%, losing area mainly to pulses and cotton, while pulses maintained 46% of their area and experienced losses to multiple crops. Oilseeds retained 67% of their previous area and gained substantial acreage from jowar and sugarcane. Overall, the results highlight significant transformations in the agricultural landscape, underscoring the dynamic interactions among crop areas in response to evolving agricultural practices and market demands. These trends align with previous research, reinforcing the observed shifts in cropping stability within the district.
