Economic analysis of chickpea price growth and volatility in Maharashtra

Author(s): Chavan SM, More SS and Choudhari PS

Abstract:
This study examined the growth rate and price volatility of chickpea prices in Maharashtra. It aimed to assess how price growth and volatility were transmitted between chickpea markets. The analysis focused on five major markets viz. Latur, Yavatmal, Nanded, Dharashiv, and Buldhana, selected for their high chickpea cultivation areas. Monthly modal price data were collected from AGMARKNET and local Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) from January 2011 to December 2023. Econometric tools such as the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), Coefficient of Variation, Cuddy-Della Valle Index (CDVI), Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and ARCH-GARCH models were employed. The study revealed that chickpea prices increased over the entire period. The CV and CDVI Analysis of chickpea markets in Maharashtra revealed significant variability, with Latur being the most stable and Dharashiv the most unstable. ADF test results indicated that all markets exhibited non-stationarity at the level series but achieved stationarity after first differencing. ARCH-GARCH analysis showed that Latur and Yavatmal experienced moderate volatility, while Nanded exhibited higher persistence. Dharashiv showed more to recent shocks and Buldhana displayed the highest volatility persistence, indicating substantial long-term stability.
