Changing consumption pattern in Maharashtra

Author(s): Ekta Sawai and Dr. Nishant Shende

Abstract: Consumption is one of the most important components of growth and development of an economy and, therefore, changing consumption patterns have significant impact. This paper attempts to highlight the trend and pattern of food and non-food consumption expenditure in rural and urban areas in Maharashtra during the period from 1972-73 to 2017-18. The monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) on food items has declined from 73.7 per cent to 48.7 per cent and on non-food items has increased from 26.2 per cent to 51.3 per cent during 27th round (1972-73) to 75th round (2017-18) in rural Maharashtra. While in the urban Maharashtra the expenditure on food items has declined from 63.6 per cent to 40.6 per cent whereas expenditure on non-food items has shown a steady increase from 36.4 per cent to 59.4 per cent during the 27th round (1972-73) to 75th round (2017-18) in rural Maharashtra. Monthly per capita consumption of major cereals (in quantity kg) has decreased in both rural and urban areas in Maharashtra during the 27th round and 75th round. An increasing share of expenditure has been going to non-food sector in both rural and urban areas; but the proportion of expenditure on food items has shown a declining trend. This decline is higher in urban areas than rural areas.
